Our Story
We didn’t plan to start a building company with a toddler on our hip and another baby on the way — but that’s exactly how Hill House began.
We’re James and Courtney Hill — partners in life, in work, and in building homes that feel as good as they look. For us, this business was never just about construction. It was about building a life: one where we could stay close to our roots in Toowoomba, raise our family with more freedom, and create homes with soul for people who value quality, character, and care.
James began his carpentry apprenticeship out in Dalby, learning the ropes the traditional way — hands-on, on-site, and with a deep respect for the trade. Later, he returned to Toowoomba to complete his training, stepping into leadership roles and managing high-end heritage renovations and new builds for one of the region’s most respected builders.
As his skills and confidence grew, so did our vision. While raising our first baby, James studied for his builder’s licence — often late at night or in the quiet hours of the morning — determined to create something of his own. It wasn’t just about career progression; it was about creating a business that gave our growing family more balance and a deeper connection to the community we love.
Our Beginnings
Hill House started with the small stuff — bathroom makeovers, maintenance jobs, and modest renovations — the kind of projects that gave us the chance to hone our craft, refine our processes, and build strong relationships with our clients.
Over time, those smaller jobs paved the way for larger, more complex renovations and extensions. We became known for restoring Queenslanders, reimagining timber cottages, and blending modern comfort into homes with history — projects where detail matters, and every decision shapes the character of the finished space.
Today, that same level of care, precision, and personal connection runs through every project we take on — whether it’s a high-end renovation or a one-of-a-kind new build designed to feel timeless from day one.
Who We Are
Hill House is more than a building company — it’s the way we work, the way we treat people, and the care we put into every project.
We believe the best homes come from close collaboration and clear communication. We stay connected with our clients from the first conversation to the final detail, making sure the process feels personal, transparent, and well-managed.
We hold ourselves (and everyone who works alongside us) to high standards — clean worksites, respectful communication, and craftsmanship we’re proud to stand behind. We value local connections, working with trusted trades and suppliers who share our commitment to quality and care.
For us, every home is a reflection of the people who live in it. That’s why we focus on building spaces that feel considered, timeless, and true to their character — homes that fit seamlessly into their story and their surroundings.
James Hill
Director & Builder
James is the steady hand guiding every Hill House project from concept to completion. Organised, detail-focused, and a clear communicator, he keeps projects moving smoothly and clients feeling confident. He thrives on problem-solving — especially the tricky parts of a build — and finds real satisfaction in seeing a space transform from start to finish.
With over 10 years’ experience, James leads with transparency, reliability, and a genuine care for the people he works with. Whether it’s clients, trades, or suppliers, he believes in doing things properly and building relationships that last.
Outside of work, you’ll find James running, camping, hiking, playing with his kids, or occasionally painting intricate Warhammer figurines — a creative outlet that helps him switch off. Above all, he’s a genuine, good human who’ll go above and beyond to deliver the best outcome for every client.
Courtney Hill
Co-Director & Client Experience
Courtney is a people person through and through — warm, approachable, and genuinely interested in the stories behind each project. She’s the one who remembers the little details about your family, your project, and probably your coffee order. With a background in hairdressing and makeup artistry, Courtney brings strong communication skills, creativity, and an eye for style to the business.
While James leads the day-to-day onsite, Courtney focuses on marketing, brand storytelling, and ensuring clients feel supported at every stage she’s involved. From keeping communication clear to styling the home for photography and celebrating handover, she’s passionate about creating a smooth and memorable experience that lasts well beyond the build.
Away from work, you’ll find her gardening, hiking, camping with her family, running, painting, or tackling creative DIY projects — always happiest when she’s outdoors or making something beautiful.
Our Approach
We believe great building is about more than skill — it’s about trust, respect, and shared vision.
By keeping our workload intentionally small, we’re able to maintain clear communication, work closely with our clients, and deliver the kind of craftsmanship we’d be proud to have in our own home.
Every decision we make is guided by three principles:
Quality — doing things properly, without shortcuts.
Character — creating homes that feel authentic, timeless, and true to their story.
Care — treating every project and every person with respect.
It’s a simple approach, but it’s one that works — and it’s why so many of our clients stay connected long after handover.
If you’re looking for a builder who values craftsmanship, communication, and character — we’d love to hear from you.
